Flippin' Snow!

Guess I will take this opportunity to rant! Red Lake was socked in a winter storm this past weekend which dumped about 12 in. of what one guest described as 'white gold' on the ground................ For those of us anxiously awaiting opening of walleye fishing season it weren't 'gold' of any kind. Mother Nature needs to turn it around quickly to get ice out moving! Let's all pray for warm, wet weather with high winds! Adella is off to clean some cabins - will keep you posted on ice out!

Ice conditions on Red Lake

Well we will soon be opening Sunset Lodge for another season of fantastic walleye and northern fishing and some hunting adventures as well. We are really looking forward to seeing everyone again and meeting new friends. I know that some are busy getting ready to head north for their Ontario getaway as I write this.

Right now Red Lake is a real mess. We have had several days with above seasonal temperatures and a warm southwest wind helped to beat things up. At the end of the walleye ice fishing season - April 15 - there was just under 3 ft. of ice which has a layer of slush in the middle which will help speed ice out.

Once this warm weather hit, the snow machines were put away in favor of quads but anyone who ventures onto the ice better be prepared to get wet! There is a lot of slush on Red Lake right now. Let's hope that Mother Nature keeps the temperature up and the warm wind blowing! Walleye season opening on Red Lake, Ontario is just 29 days away.
